Lady Douglass de Clifford is less than thrilled at the notion of venturing to Scotland to marry the English knight who holds a castle for their king there. She doesn’t really think the English have any business trying to force the Scots off their own land anyway. When her traveling party is attacked outside her betrothed’s gates, Douglass finds herself kidnapped by a Highland warrior, though he promises her safety all the while. She fully intends to flee from him at the first opportunity, but his tenderness soon challenges everything she thought she knew about the Scots.

Laird Noah Sinclair, the Earl of Caithness, had no intention of taking a bride at all, much less an English one, but he knows no better way to keep her safe from his enemy. Though passion ignites between Noah and Douglass, a true love seems unlikely given the reasons for their marriage and the remaining threat of the English knight whose bride was stolen.

This was a fun and fast Highland romp. The heroine, Douglass, had to grow on me, but I did like her by the end. Noah was very sweet with her, but I would’ve enjoyed a bit more character examination on how he went from not believing in marital love to being in love with his new wife and being the one to confess his feelings first. Some aspects of their relationship development felt a bit incomplete, but it was a quick enough story that I didn’t really mind. Overall, this was a fun marriage of convenience story to pass the time with.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
