Greer Gunn lived her life in fear each day until her father’s death. As his only child and a daily reminder of his lack of heir, Greer did all she could to survive, watching and learning her father’s secrets so she could use them to protect her people from his poor leadership and warmongering ways. Upon his death Greer is freed but left with no true place in clan who doesn’t want her to remain a part of it, so she turned to her lifelong best friend for help. Unfortunately, it is her best friend’s brother she can’t stop thinking about, leaving Greer to wonder if she can move beyond her secrets to grasp a shred of happiness with the man who had been her enemy.
As the heir to both the lairdship of the Clan Sinclair and the Earldom of Caithness, Thormud Sinclair has always been very aware of his duty to his clan, but that doesn’t stop him from becoming caught up once again in the allure of Greer Gunn. No one knows of their shared, painful past and they both wish to forget it as well, but there’s no way that will ever happen since Greer’s uncle was responsible for the death of Thor’s best friend during their first battle. That day changed everything for Greer and Thor and the pain of it remains a wall between them even as their past history pushes them together now, leaving Thor to wonder if he can risk losing more to Clan Gunn than he already has.
When Greer’s life is threatened, Thor steps up to protect her, forcing these would be enemies together and necessitating the communication they’ve both avoided for so long.
This was one heck of a nail-biter for me. I don’t want to say much and risk inadvertently spoiling anything, but Greer and Thor faced so many obstacles to their HEA that I was simultaneously needing a break from the stress of their story and not wanting to put it down. It was obvious in the previous book that there was something going on between them, so I was happy to get the answers here and I continue to adore the family relationships and loyalty among the Sinclairs and their extended family and it was endearing to see Greer getting to experience that familial love for the first time. I loved how these two stood by one another and protected each other and their story was a lovely addition to a series I am thoroughly enjoying.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
