American journalist Megan Mulcahey has come to England along with her father and younger sister to find out the truth about her brother’s death in a South American jungle ten years ago. They’ve been told the man responsible is Theo Moreland, Marquess of Raine, and she intends to find a position in his household so she can learn the truth.

Theo can’t help but be intrigued by his younger brothers’ new American tutor. He’s always felt the itch to travel again almost as soon as he returns to England, but that feeling dissipates with Megan’s arrival. Both Megan and Theo can feel the strange connection between them and it’s as enticing as it is terrifying, especially since Theo recognizes as the woman he saw once before, years ago, near death and in the midst of a fever dream. He’s not keen to let her go now, especially since he needs to learn why he keeps catching her skulking about his family’s home in places she ought not be.

I selected this book on a whim as I recently acquired a paperback copy and I’ve had the kindle version on my TBR forever, so I decided to finally read it on audio of course. I’ve only read a couple of books in this series and those have been all out of order, but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of this one. This installment had more of a paranormal element than I had been anticipating, even having read those other books, and I think it really worked here. I would never have expected it, but this was a very appropriate read to start getting me into a fall mood and I loved how its moody atmosphere drew me in. Megan, the heroine, did frustrate me quite a bit with her insistence on maintaining her belief in Theo’s duplicity even after having met him and seen what his character truly was, but her willingness to listen to his side of the story and maintain an open line of communication allowed me to overlook this gripe. I enjoyed these two as a couple, though I do wish we’d gotten more on page time with them together after all truths are revealed and a bit more steam wouldn’t have hurt as I was just left feeling that their relationship solidified a bit quickly. Nonetheless, I still liked these two together and I enjoyed their story and their respective families.
