Lord Percy Montague, Baron Sigglethorpe, is the uninvited guest at the Duke of Malton’s summer house party who just won’t leave. He’s a pompous peacock, a shameless dandy, and greatly entertaining to have around. He’s also been friends with the duke since childhood, so his extended stay is tolerated.

Lieutenant Clarence Bond is not someone one would expect to encounter attending a house party at the home of a duke. He is loud, brass, course, all the things Percy is not. His father, a wealthy industrialist, purchased Clarence’s naval commission, but he’s not overly impressed with the nobility he’s met up to this point.

When Percy finds a lost child completely by happenstance, he becomes the hero of Hull, celebrated and well-liked by everyone in town. Clarence sees right through Percy’s attempts to play the hero and knows exactly what sort of trouble Percy was attempting to find. To keep Percy distracted from such dangers, Clarence decides to finally act on the attraction he’s been tamping down. But the lark turns into real acts of heroism and a much deeper love than either was prepared for.

These two have been dancing around one another for the whole series so it was lovely to see them finally come together. I also really liked that we finally got to see beneath Percy’s foppish exterior to the real man beneath the façade. The same is true, perhaps to a lesser extent, for Clarence and I loved the layers they had. It was also great to finally get to the bottom of the villainous element that has been present throughout the series and see some justice served. Clarence and Percy had definite chemistry and I was glad to see someone finally stand up for Percy against those who would treat him poorly or as less than. Clarence saw more in him and he was willing to fight for it and I will never not love that in a romance.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
