Sophia Sydney is determined to capture the attention of Sir Ross Cannon, one of London’s most eligible bachelors. She blames him for her brother’s death and has decided to ruin his reputation as Bow Street’s Chief Magistrate with scandal. She gets a job as his assistant, living in his house and earning his trust and respect and soon decides to break his heart as well as ruining his reputation.

Ross is definitely distracted by Sophia’s presence in his house, and he hasn’t missed the interested looks she’s cast his way. Sophia knows Ross’ feelings for her have surpassed mere lust, but she never counted on falling in love with him in return and soon she has to decide what to do with her original plans when he offers her a very proper proposal of marriage.

I finally picked this book off my shelf as part of my new campaign to try to read at least some of my physical books. This one was highly recommended on bookstagram so I decided to start here and I was not disappointed. I loved Ross’ gruff sternness and protectiveness, especially when that hard exterior turned out to be hiding a molten hot, passionate interior. Once he was unleashed, his pursuit of Sophia was relentless and at times he pushed her harder than she was comfortable with, but I think overall she needed that nudge to believe herself worthy of having the kind of stable relationship Ross wanted. After the tragedy he’d endured, it was very satisfying to see him find someone who wanted to take care of him and be there for him. I was definitely nervous about the revenge plot because it’s not something I typically like, but it was handled well here with Sophia falling for Ross very early on and not doing anything to hurt him that would’ve made me dislike her. I actually really liked the communication between Ross and Sophia and especially their willingness to forgive each other for mistakes both past and current. I also liked that their story didn't end with the wedding, but rather, we got some of their relationship and it's continued development afterwards. I’m happy to say that this one lived up to the hype for me and I wish we had more of these protective alpha heroes like Ross who just melt for the right woman. I really liked these two together way more than I expected to and I’m looking forward to the next book now.
