Franny Doyle’s day goes from bad to worse when she’s let go from her job and then betrayed by her favorite dress on the subway, flashing much of Manhattan in the process. Fortunately, an undeniably attractive stranger comes to her rescue with his suit jacket; unfortunately, he’s also quick to run away from her at the next subway stop.

Things go from bad to worse when it turns out that this whole scene has been posted in real time on social media, cashing Franny and Hayes Montgomery III, as a romantic love match. Franny and Hayes couldn’t be more opposite. She’s creative and vivacious while he’s a serious, quiet businessman and both are okay if they never have to see each other again. But somehow, the city is a small place and Hayes and Franny keep running into each other, enough to realize they actually do enjoy one another’s company quite a lot. Until Franny’s life hits another snag, and her insecurities get the best of her, leaving her to decide if she can trust herself enough to go after what she truly wants.

I think this book was more of a love letter to New York City than anything else, but it did have me cracking up and looking like a lunatic on a few of my daily runs. I adored the humor and hilarity of this story. Hayes’ awkwardness despite the fact that he appeared to have everything together was so relatable and a good reminder to laugh at yourself from time to time. Franny’s initial judgment of him as cocky or arrogant when really, he was just shy and socially awkward is the story of my life and I related to Hayes so much in this. On the other hand, this same element made me a little predisposed to dislike Franny, just because she didn’t really give him much of a chance. Though a lot of that was because of her own insecurities, it went on for a bit too long for me. Even after they were honest with each other and Hayes was all in, doing amazingly nice things for her, she was still quick to throw it in his face when things got tough. I appreciated that she stepped up to fix the things she’d broken, but I just wish it hadn’t taken her so long to do that. Overall, I wanted Hayes and Franny to have more one-on-one time with that nice open communication and they really only got about two good scenes of this, though, to be fair, one was quite long. Otherwise, I thought Hayes was adorable and I now want to visit NYC. I’d recommend this for anyone who wants a good, rom-com style laugh, especially the audiobook version as the narrators’ deliveries of the humor in this book were spot on.

I voluntarily listened to and reviewed an audio advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
