Hannah Bexley is well-known as a nice girl, everyone’s friend, always eager to help out any way she can, but her reputation as a vivacious hoyden makes her less than ideal for marriage. Which is no matter to her, since she plans to uphold the girlhood pact she made with her friends to never marry.
A country manor with her friends seems like the perfect future to Hannah until Lucien Lambert, the Earl of Brightstone, asks for her help in making himself more attractive to women so he’ll have a better chance of finding a wife. Hannah sees no reason not to help him. It’s not as if she wants him for herself since they’re much too different. Lucien is a rule follower while Hannah follows most every impulse. He’s seeking a wife and she’s certain she’ll never marry. But her heart has other ideas.
Poor Hannah definitely had some growing up to do and her impulsivity drove me crazy at times, but I think part of that was because I can identify with her so well from how I could be in my younger years. Thankfully, she did also demonstrate a good bit of growth in her character as she learned not to believe everything she heard and to give Lucien a chance to explain himself. Lucien was an adorably awkward hero who started off pretty clueless but quickly learned to stand up for himself and what he wanted for his life, so I loved that. Hannah definitely got in her own way quite a bit, which annoyed me, but it’s also something that resonates with me on a pretty fundamental level. That also made it more worthwhile when she finally did listen to Lucien, and he was at last able to express himself effectively. This was a light, warm story and a lovely set up for a new series.
