Raised the son of a mercenary in a land that recognizes no king, Kipp Aldwine has been reluctant to take his place as the heir to the king of Meria. He’s always resisted the conventions upheld in the capital and resents the man who abandoned him, but he also can’t forsake people who need him to step up and lead the country. With the capital under siege by a would-be usurper, Kipp heads south, gaining support for his claim to the throne. Along the way, he meets wine merchant’s daughter Lilah and knows she’s the one for him.
Seeking adventure, Lilah hides on her father’s ship for the journey to the besieged capital where she finds Kipp again. Reunited, Kipp is determined not to let her go again, even if it could mean saving the people he’s come to defend.
This is one of the best instant love tropes I’ve ever read. I do wish we’d gotten more conversation between Kipp and Lilah and yet I was somehow still convinced of their love and that their relationship was real and would last. I loved how determined they were to be together and that there was no game-playing on either side. The suspense of the city being under siege kept me engaged without making me feel uneasy or stressed. I have to say, I was shipping Cettina and Kipp in the previous books, but this worked out so much better than I could’ve imagined. I enjoyed the fast pace of this story and the genuine goodness and reliability of Kipp. This was an excellent conclusion, even if I am sad to see the series end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
