Handsome, well-liked rogue Colin Eversea has been arrested and sentenced to hang for a murder he did not commit and the only witness to his innocence has gone missing. In their rather colorful and illustrious history, the Everseas have always managed to come out on top and with great style, and Colin is no exception as he finds himself taken from the gallows by a lovely mercenary.
Madeline Greenway is cool and unaffected by Colin’s megawatt charm. She’s being well paid to kidnap Colin and plans to use the funds to start a new life in America. But plans quickly go awry when it seems whoever hired Madeline to keep Colin alive also wants her dead. Colin and Madeline become wary allies as they journey covertly in and around London seeking the truth and attempting to clear his name. The danger brings them together, but their bond quickly deepens into something more and inevitable for them both.
There was a lot going on in this story and I think, for me, the elaborate plot would’ve been better served by reading rather than listening. I kept feeling like I was missing things and I’m still not entirely certain I have the full picture of what happened. Nonetheless, I really liked Madeline as an unconventional heroine and I loved that it was she who was reluctant to fall for Colin, despite the inevitability of both their feelings, as well as the fact that it was her dramatically going back after him in the end. I think that final reconciliation goes down as one of my favorite scenes ever. Colin was full of charm and I loved that, though his family really let him down, he was never brought too low or depressed. His joking cheerfulness, even if he wasn’t truly feeling that way, made his charm rather irresistible and I felt myself falling for him right along with Madeline.
It took a bit for both Colin and Madeline to grow on me, as they grew on each other, but I think that’s part of the charm of this story and I did like these two together as both a couple and a team. Colin and Madeline fell for each other pretty quickly, but I suppose it worked given the danger aspect of their time together. The premise here was quite different and interesting and while this isn’t quite a new favorite for me, it kept me entertained. I enjoyed the banter, the writing, and the plot, and will continue the series.
