Eveline Armstrong is sheltered by her clan since an accident three years ago rendered her “daft.” She hasn’t spoken a word since, but what no one knows is that there’s nothing wrong with her mind, she simply can no longer hear. She’s been content with her life and learned to adapt by reading lips in order to understand much of the world around her, though she allows everyone to think her daft. But when the king decrees that she must marry Graeme Montgomery, the laird of her family’s enemy clan, she begins to see her chance for a fresh start. She’s so shocked by Graeme’s gentleness and the feelings he stirs in her that she’s afraid to tell him the truth lest his tenderness end.

Graeme can’t help his curiosity about Eveline. Her intelligence is evident, and he soon realizes all is not as it first seemed with her. As they grow closer, he eventually learns her secret and is relieved to have a wife with whom he can build a real future. His clan is less ready to accept her and when their petty jealousies threaten the woman he has grown to love, Graeme will stop at nothing to set things right.

This was an audio revisit of a book I read and enjoyed several years ago, and it held up just as well this time around. Graeme is everything I want in a strong Highlander hero and I enjoyed Eveline as a heroine. Her strength was a perfect match for his and the fact that he was so hopeful for a love match was very endearing. I loved Graeme’s protectiveness, the action, the villain, the rescue, the character development. I was immersed in the story and it was the perfect escape from reality for me. This is traditional Highlander romance for me, and I wish it was easier to find these days. I never got around to reading anything else from this author, but I hope to soon.
