Since his entire family was murdered by an unfeeling English baron when he was just a boy, Reid MacLeod has devoted his life to gaining vengeance. With the Scottish king reclaiming lands lost to England, Reid has worked to become one of his top warriors. Now, entrusted with the role of messenger, he must warn one of Scotland’s border strongholds of an impending attack from the English. On the journey he crosses paths with the beautiful woman he’s been unable to forget since he first set on her a year ago.
Clara Fletcher is tired of discussions of her future causing arguments between her mother and older brother and decides to make her own decision and employ her healing skills as a nun. She sets out on her own but during her travels a skirmish with stray English reivers leads to her accidentally wounding a Scot. She tends to his injuries and when she finds out his mission, she knows she must travel with him to keep helping him heal. She also can’t seem to bring herself to part with him for other reasons, most keenly the intense feeling of connection he stirs in her.
With opposing goals in a war-torn land, a future between Clara and Reid seems impossible. He’ll have to set aside his fears and his need for revenge, and she’ll have to put her own needs first for once if they’re to stand a chance.
I’m beginning to wonder if Madeline can write a book I don’t like. This story was excellent, with complex characters and a fast-paced storyline that kept my attention. Reid had so much pain to work through, it was heartrending and Clara’s sweet, caretaking disposition was just what he needed. Clara had always focused on others and pushed her own feelings down, but Reid truly saw her and helped her do what she wanted for herself. Reid and Clara healed each other and brought out the best in each other and that was lovely, especially given the stress of all the fighting going on. I loved this couple, and Reid is now one of my all time favorite heroes. I can’t wait for Drake’s long-anticipated story now.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
