You're the Rogue That I Want by Samantha Holt | ARC Review

Series: Rogues of Redmere, #1
Tropes & Traits: titled hero; heroine in danger
Publication Date: 10.26.16
Genre/Setting: Historical; Regency; Cornwall, England, 1811
Rating: 4 stars

Hannah St. John finds herself in the small Cornwall village of Penshallow after a long journey on her own, seeking help from the infamous smuggler, Red, to bring a priceless Egyptian artifact from France to England. Red is uninterested, as he has no need for more money; he's an earl, after all. Red is careful to keep his smuggling endeavors quiet and wholly unconnected to his life as the upstanding Earl of Redmere. Of course, Red's smuggling ring is just a front used to get spies and supplies into France to aide efforts in the war against Napoleon, though even the Home Office, though aware, cannot acknowledge the operation, so the dangers in being caught are just as real. But when Hannah's determination to retrieve the artifact nearly results in her kidnapping, Red decides to listen to her plea for help a bit more closely. Red has absolutely no interest in the historical merits of this artifact, but winds up agreeing to help Hannah anyway, since she is on her own and he is concerned she'll wind up with more criminals. Once the artifact is retrieved, Red winds up accompanying Hannah to London to deliver it to the national museum, encountering heaps of bad luck along the way.

I was very unimpressed with Hannah's arrogance, attitude, and need to have things her own way, but she does at least realize she's being ridiculous and starts to straighten up as she gets to know Red more. I thought this one was a bit anticlimactic, but I was eventually satisfied with the resolution; I would recommend it.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
