Terrence Howard, the Earl of Shaftesbury, has despaired over his wife’s disappearance for the last two years. Now that he’s spotted her outside his house and forced a confrontation, he wants answers to a myriad of questions, but even in his confusion, his love for her is still very much intact.

Elizabeth Markham Howard is only a pretend lady but was born poor and hides plenty of secrets. She left intentionally, as part of her revenge on the man she tricked to the altar. Her game is rapidly coming to an end as her payback brings her nothing but misery and she begins to realize she’s made some grave mistakes.

This was a very short read and a twist on the revenge trope that I’ve never read before. I felt for poor Terrence and I think he still got the shaft even in the end. Elizabeth was illogical and rash in her revenge plan, especially since it brought her just as much suffering as Terrence, if not more, and could’ve been easily avoided. Her stubbornness just came off as immaturity to me. I enjoyed the fast pace, though the storyline did wrap up very quickly given that this is a novella. This was a unique premise that had me cheering for the hero and wanting to shake the heroine, but it was a quick and entertaining read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
