Sherborn Price, the Duke of Danby, is known to be an accomplished rake, but he’s capable of being serious as well, so when the Prime Minister charges him with stamping out smuggling and preventing the Prince Regent from bankrupting the country again, Danby is committed to seeing it through.

Eleanor Kent is a respectable spinster and a favorite of the Prince Regent, but she’s also a sought-after smuggler.

When the two happen to be seated together at a dinner party hosted by the Prince Regent, Danby finds himself curious about the real woman beneath the façade Eleanor presents to the ton.  He hires her to do a remodel in his townhouse and Eleanor is obliged to accept, despite her suspicions of Danby’s motives.  The two spend more time together and circumstances become more precarious as each learns the other’s secrets.  Though there is a clear attraction between them, that may not be enough to overcome the gulf that separates them.

I’ve finally finished my first read of the new year and it took me much longer than I think it should have.  This is partially because I’ve been so busy but is also due to the very slow pace of this book.  Each scene was described in exquisite detail and it made for a lovely, classic-feeling Regency, but it did get just a bit tedious at times.  I found Sher to be a bit of a prig, and it was hard to like him, though he did eventually grow on me.  I was a fan of Eleanor’s ingenuity and how she took care of herself and her father however she could.  It was a bit disappointing that she gave that up so easily, but she was backed into a corner with little recourse.  I wound up enjoying this couple overall and though we did get quite a lot of mundane detail here, the writing was solid.  I’m familiar with this author’s highlander romances and will now read more of her regencies as well.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
