Anthony, Viscount Bridgerton has decided it’s time he settled down and got married. He’s gone so far as to select a wife. Unfortunately, the lady’s elder sister, one Miss Kate Sheffield, has taken him into dislike and is determined to prevent the match. Anthony is furious at the interference, but it’s Kate who increasingly features in his thoughts and dreams.
Kate doesn’t believe a reformed rake would make a good husband and is determined to keep her sister from being hurt. Too bad it’s her own heart that’s in danger. As she comes to know the real Anthony behind the bad reputation, she realizes she may have been wrong about him, but she won’t stand in the way of her sister’s happiness even though she’s developing feelings for the rake herself.
This is probably an unpopular opinion, but Anthony really had to grown on me and he’s still not my favorite hero. I loved the ridiculous lightness and humor of this book, but Anthony’s questionable behavior for much of it meant that it took a while for me to get into it. The Bridgerton family was utterly charming as a whole and made me wish I were a part of it. When Anthony finally opened his eyes to his feelings, he wound up being quite sweet and he and Kate were lovely as a couple. It was delightful to see that Kate gave Anthony no quarter and that made their relationship work. I wish he’d had to do a bit more to make up for his previously terrible behavior, but perhaps that wouldn’t have fit the lightness of the rest of the book. The sisterly bond between Kate and Edwina was also very sweet and refreshingly angst-free. I wound up enjoying this book overall, but there were definitely times when it just didn’t grab me or I couldn’t be bothered to deal with Anthony and so I opted to listen to something else instead. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to Benedict’s book. We haven’t seen much of him so far and I’m hoping he’s a hit.
