Eugenia, now the Dowager Duchess of Kendal, has spent the last two years grieving her beloved husband in virtual seclusion.  Her cousin has at last convinced Genie to attend a house party she’s hosting, which Genie views as a chance to reenter society gradually.  What her cousin doesn’t tell Genie is that the house party has been arranged as a matchmaking opportunity for widows, widowers, and unmarried gentlemen.  When she learns the truth, Genie’s first impulse is to flee, but by then she is trapped by bad weather.

Edmund Holt, the Earl of Satterfield, was enamored of Genie when she first made her come out, so he’s thrilled to find her in attendance at the party.  It’s time he married at last and he hopes for another chance with the woman he never quite forgot.  Their attraction is mutual and intense, but there are problems, not the least of which is Edmund’s need for an heir and Genie’s inability to have more children.  Genie also wishes to be a mother again, so a man with children would be ideal.  Now Edmund and Genie must decide where their priorities lie and if their newfound love is strong enough to overcome these very real obstacles.

If you’re a fan of brutal honesty and grand, romantic gestures, give this book a try.  Edmund’s admiration of Genie years before was very sweet, as was his patience while she sorted out her feelings and grief.  The fact that these two were both willing to fight for each other was the most endearing element to me and had me rooting for them too.  I loved that Edmund and Genie made each other their priority in a world that preaches the importance and necessity of children above all else.  This was an excellent and very steamy, feel good prequel and I quite enjoyed it.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
