As King’s Commander, Lord Vanni d’Abella knows exactly what his duty is during his stay at Murwood End.  His king’s son and heir is dead and Vanni’s mission is to convince the king’s illegitimate son to return with him as the king’s successor, a key to preserving peace in Meria.    But things aren’t exactly going smoothly.  No one knows when to expect the hopeful future king home from his latest voyage and the man’s closet friend takes an almost immediate dislike to Vanni.

Though he can’t afford distractions, Vanni is enthralled by Aedre Lorenson, a bold Garra who practices her healing arts out in the open.  Vanni tells himself he’s merely courting favor to gain an audience with the man he’s in Murwood to meet, but as he spends more time with Aedre, his outlook changes and he finds himself torn between his duty to the king who raised him as a son and the longing in his own heart.

This is such a great start to a new series!  It’s got a little bit of everything going on with its Medieval, almost fantastical feel and it was something really refreshing and different.  I loved the idea of Aedre being unexperienced but well-informed and making her own decisions.  In fact, the whole idea of the people of Murwood End doing things their own way and recognizing no ruler was very intriguing and charming, not to mention the possibilities that dynamic opens.  Vanni was totally enamored of Aedre almost from the get-go and gaining his outlook on the confusion he felt and how he struggled to process his newfound feelings made this so interesting.  I was a bit nervous about this being written in first person as that’s not something I typically care for, but that decision, along with the dual points of view, gave us a lot more insight into the characters and their feelings and made them more relatable.  This book held my interest and kept me rooting for this unlikely couple as they got to know each other, learned to communicate and recognize new feelings, and deal with outside threats.  I also really liked the sibling-like relationship between Kipp and Aedre and I’m very much hoping he’ll get his own book later on.  I’m loving this new concept and the feel it has and I can’t wait to see where this series takes us.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
