Under immense pressure from her family to live up to an impossible level of perfection, Lady Arabella Johnstone has increasingly struggled under the burden.  Renowned for her beauty by everyone at the Court of King Robert the Bruce and with her father talking of arranging a betrothal for her, Arabella is crumbling under the pressure.  When it becomes too much for her, she finds solace in whisky and when her behavior grows increasingly self-destructive and her situation more bleak, she may be too defeated to accept help, even when it comes from the man she’s always loved.

Lachlan Sutherland has longed for Arabella since he first met her five years ago, but given her close friendships with both his sisters, he has maintained his distance, despite how difficult it’s been to do so.  But with both his sisters now married and away from court, Lachlan finds he can no longer resist Arabella’s witty humor and loyalty.  When he learns Arabella’s harmful secret, Lachlan is even more certain he can no longer ignore his feelings for her.

Though they’re finally honest with each other about their feelings, it’s possible Lachlan and Arabella have left if too late to announce their intentions.  Her father is on the cusp of signing her betrothal to another and he won’t be easily put off, sending Arabella once more to the whisky.  Lachlan is only more determined to make her his but convincing her that his feelings are true and not merely a reaction to her beauty won’t be easy.

I so enjoyed finally seeing Lachlan and Arabella together.  They certainly didn’t have an easy time of it with so many outside forces working to keep them apart along with Arabella herself causing problems within her own mind.  She so needed to experience unconditional acceptance and Lachlan’s steadfastness and determination to see her better was lovely and heartwarming.  This story had so many ups and downs and even though they made Lachlan and Arabella’s relationship even stronger, I was glad to see these two finally get a break and some peace together.  I look forward to the next installment of this delightful series.
