Since being attacked by her brother’s powerful friend several years ago, Lady Verity Ayles has never really felt safe. She’s finally back in London for the season and determined not to feel helpless and afraid anymore. In order to achieve this goal, she enlists the help of Lord James Radcliffe, the Earl of Maschelly, a scandalous man known to spend time prizefighting. She should have the good sense to stay away from him and not risk ruin, but ridding herself of her nightmares is more important.
James was not raised as a typical earl, but rather as a poor tenant farmer, hated by his father who blamed him for his beloved wife’s death in childbirth. His wicked reputation has encouraged women to proposition him for affairs, but never has he received a request like the one Lady Verity puts to him: if he teaches her how to fight, she’ll help him polish his manners so he can secure a wife of the quality. He agrees but soon their relationship progresses more he’d expected and he can’t imagine not having her in his life.
I loved this one! It was quick and held my attention. Verity was a great strong heroine without being annoying and James was a fabulous hero with a unique backstory. I loved that he was tough and strong, and yet tender with Verity and the fact that he kept thinking himself unworthy was just heartrending. I was very glad to see them get their happy ending.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
