Seductive Scot by Julie Johnstone and Cecelia Mecca | ARC Review

Series: Highlanders Through Time, #3
Tropes & Traits: damaged hero
Publication Date: 4.23.20
Genre: Time Travel
Rating: 5 stars!

Reikart McCaim is a time traveler from modern-day New Orleans searching for his missing family in turbulent medieval Scotland. But that volatility is nothing compared to the unrest within himself, pain and guilt he can't let go of and which keeps him closed off from everyone, including his family and the lovely woman whose help he needs to see his family safely returned to their time.

Deirdre Irvine finds herself betrayed by the brother she loved and her life in shambles, all the while she is being drawn into a plot to see control of Scotland settled with the English king. She's also overcome with guilt for how she failed her sister, so when the chance to redeem herself by recovering a magic cross, she takes it. She doesn't mind putting herself in danger to help her sister, but she's not prepared for the danger facing her heart from the man who's meant to help her recover the cross.

Deirdre and Reikart are faced with dangerous enemies, but the real division between them is caused by the protective walls they've put up around themselves. Both must learn to face their ghosts and find their strength if they're to survive, much less stay together.

I couldn't put this book down! It was so emotional and Reikart's pain was so palpable, which served to make his growth all the more satisfying. Deirdre was perfect for him and it was nice to see her come into her own and develop as a person while she gave Reikart just the challenge he needed. There was a perfect balance here between drama, romance, and light, entertaining banter that held my interest without being heavily angst-driven. It's bittersweet to see this series nearly over but I'm excited for the final book and hoping to see everyone safely returned to New Orleans together.
