As the illegitimate son of the Duke of Melverly, a man notorious for his temper, Lucius Daventry has faced no end of often unmerited judgments from society. Beneath the rakish facade he presents to the world he hides his leadership of a secret society, the Order of Themis, dedicated to seeking justice for those who'd otherwise have no hope of it. But with his mentor and the society's former leader, Atticus Atwood, dead under mysterious circumstances, Lucius is determined to find justice for him, and uphold his vow to keep the man's daughter safe.Sybil Atwood is still grieving for her father a year after his death and now she's receiving threatening letters demanding she recover her father's journals, or else. But her father left all of his journals to the despicable Lucius Daventry, which still baffles Sybil, but leaves her with no choice but to try to reason with the scoundrel.
As Sybil's determined curiosity keeps her in close proximity to Lucius, they both find themselves in danger and trying to unravel an increasingly complicated mystery. The attraction between them is undeniable, but he's sworn to protect Sybil, even from himself. But Sybil's curiosity, especially when she begins to know the real Lucius Daventry, means their relationship is inevitable if they can just outwit those who mean them harm.
This book was stunning and exquisite, just what I needed for a distraction right now. Sybil's incessant curiosity toed the line between charming and annoying without ever crossing it and she was perfect for Lucius. Lucius was a lovely, multi-faceted hero who really just wanted to experience and give love and that just makes me melt every time. He was lovely and he and Sybil were perfect for each other. I loved the mystery element and it kept my attention even as I slowed myself down and savored the book. This has turned out to be one of my favorite series and I'm so sad to see it come to an end but also very excited for the next upcoming series from an excellent author.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
